How to reach the Garnet Chapel on the Penken

The Mayrhofner Bergbahnen and Finkenberger Almbahnen cable cars offer a quick and easy ride up the Penken mountain.

In winter you can also use the Horbergbahn, Penkenbahn, Finkenberger Almbahn, Rastkogelbahn and Eggalmbahn cable cars to access the ski region. The Granatalm mountain lodge is located on the sunny Penkenjoch plateau, right next to the mountain stations of the following cable cars:

  • Section II of the Finkenberger Almbahn cable car
  • Katzenmoosbahn cable car
  • Nordhangbahn cable car
  • Kinderland children’s playground baby lift
  • Hasenmuldenlift ski lift

In summer you can access the Granatalm mountain lodge directly via the Finkenberger Almbahn cable car. Alternatively, you can reach it on foot from the Finkenberger Almbahn mid-station (about a 1- to 1.5-hour walk), from the Penkenbahn mountain station (a 1.5-hour walk along the panoramic route), or the Kombibahn mountain station (a 30-minute walk).

There are also numerous Alpine hiking paths for fit hikers from Mayrhofen, Finkenberg or Lanersbach. A hike up the mountain takes between 2.5 and 4 hours.

Bikers have a lot of different routes to choose from:

  • from Finkenberg via Astegg to Penken
  • from Finkenberg via Naudisweg to the mid-station
  • from Lanersbach via the Schrofenalm and Wanglalm mountain huts
  • from Hippach via the Zillertaler Höhenstraße (scenic road) and Horberg
  • If you prefer a more comfortable ascent, you can take the Penkenbahn or Finkenberger Almbahn cable cars.
